Is Manhattan Dead? Or more precisely, is Manhattanism of Koolhaas come to a dead end? Facing all the 21s century impediments including the environmental crisis and the terms of a promised sea level rise, this research/speculative project attempts to revisit the history of Manhattan’s future. It engages a retro-prospective vision for Roosevelt Island in New York City. Depending on the PlaNYC and if the city wishes to anticipate an additional one million inhabitant by the year 2030, it is primordial to reflect upon the problematic of the sea level rise as a new factor of metropolitan congestion. 007.jpgBecause this island is the second most inhabited Island of the Manhattan’s boroughs and because Roosevelt Island is a vulnerable example regarding sea level rise, the project suggests to consider the area as a laboratory for a flooding future. As a first step strategy, a conditional prototype is designed to activate the relationship between the mega-structure of Queens borough Bridge and the geographical condition that it spans and ignores. A pedestrian and bicycle access could be instantly and easily created. The bridge deck, at 40 meters elevation becomes an alternative ground for the future island’s development. Under this new reference level, we flip the Skyline as a theoretical tool for thinking the many ways that skyscrapers hit the instable ground. 008aa.jpgAs a possible three-dimensional urbanism detonator, the morphology of this tower claims the simultaneous urgency of the horizontal and the vertical. In fact, the building becomes less of a tower than a suspended HUB opposing what Paul Virilio calls the « impasse en altitude » concerning the skyscraper. The square elevation is the result of two logics of parcelling: the building and the Island itself. This project proposes a « city within the city » many programs in declining relations to water. The skyscraper, tired to rush in to the sky will then inaugurate in Manhattan a mutation of its priorities for tomorrow.
